Planning a Lands End to John O’Groats Ride

So you have decided that you want to cycle Lands End to John O’Groats, what next?

Cycling the length of Great Britain is no easy task and putting a plan in place is only the start of the fun.  There are many things to consider when undertaking a multi-day cycle ride and a lot of these are based on two main factors.

  • Budget
  • Time

These two factors will determine many things in the planning process from the basic how long will the ride take, where am I going, what will I need and where will I sleep.  Working out these key points will then allow you to put a firm plan in place.

Planning My LEJOG

When I started planning my ride I was clear in my mind that I wanted to take my time and be able to stop as and when I wanted.  I gave myself around three weeks to complete the ride but was flexible.  I wanted to have a comfortable bed each night so camping was out of the question.  Cycling the Coast and Castles, NCN Route 1 up the Northumberland Coast was also my aim. With my aims decided I started planning my ride.

I then started looking at the logistics, and transport to and from the start. What equipment I would need? Is my bike ready for such a long ride? Am I fit enough?
