Staying at the Station Hotel Gloucester

Following my plan to book the cheapest accommodation possible each day, I found myself at the Station Hotel in Gloucester on day 6. It was a long day on the bike from Bath where I met the fellow LEJOG’er Tony. I booked the room early afternoon after doing some research earlier in the day.

The room cost me £59 .58p via Booking.com which consisted of a double room, Bed and Breakfast.

The hotel had mixed reviews but I will always take these things with a pinch of salt, and being the cheapest place to stay I was not expecting the Ritz.

I left Tony near the recently developed Gloucester Quays and headed for the Station Hotel. I cycled up through the town centre following the sat nav on my smart phone.

As the name suggests the hotel is situated over the road from Gloucester Railway Station.

On arrival I was met with a tired and slightly run-down exterior, I entered the bar to be met with a group at a table who seemed to be running the place. I guy jumped behind the bar and checked me in. At first, it was intimidating with a group all staring at me however it was a friendly welcome.

I was allowed to lock my bike up in the function room which was next door to the bar. I was a little worried as it could be seen from the street and the nature of any bar is that people come and go. I chained it to the radiator and headed off up to my room.

The room was large, street view, and dated. The window looked out onto the busy street and was barely shut. The room was not 100% clean however in my eyes you get what you pay for. There was a big water stain on the ceiling and a bit of what looked like a little bit of mould on the sheet.

None of the above particularly bothered me as I arrived in a bit of a state, covered in dust and dirt from a day of cycling. The bathroom again was not spotless but the towels were and the shower was great.

A Drink in the Bar at the Station Hotel

I have to say the bar while run down and in need of a refurb was good. A great selection of beer and it was busy. The bar staff were friendly and it was reasonably priced.
